ENVIRONMENTAL AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
SEEP's central theme is water and living within a sustainable arid ecosystem, and involves a hands-on approach for the students and members of the community. The program addresses all aspects of riparian areas, desert frailty and adaptation, water conservation, roles of various agencies, personal responsibility, desert safety, and empowering students to get involved as citizens in making environmental decisions. The program is based on the California State Framework for Science, the California State Environmental Education Guide, Project Wild, Project Wild Aquatics, Project Archaeology, NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), and the National Wildlife Federation's Naturescope (Desert). SEEP will offer thematic instruction centering on water and field study sessions conducted in the canyon. The entire program will set the stage for a lifelong excitement about the outdoors, and a desire to learn about and care for the environment.

Students will appreciate the great diversity among living things in the canyon, and that these living things have adaptations that enable them to live in their desert riparian habitat. Students will learn what living things need for a healthy environment, and ways that people can positively affect that environment. SEEP will provide students with the skills and the knowledge necessary to make intelligent personal and social decisions concerning the environment and its resources.
