HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE!

The first Church of The Nazarene was founded in 1895 by Dr. Phineas F. Bresee with the assistance of Dr. J.P. Widney, founder of the Los Angeles Medical Society and Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Southern California who later became the President of USC. The first Church of The Nazarene was located at the corner of 6th and Wall in downtown Los Angeles. Original hand written sermon notes of Dr. Phineas F. Bresee will be on display at our 100th Birthday party on October 5th at Kerr McGee Civic Center.

Los Angeles First Church of The Nazarene recognized the need for a trained ministry and educated laity. On SEPTEMBER 29, 1902 THE PACIFIC BIBLE COLLEGE opened it’s doors! Pacific Bible College was located at the corner of San Pedro and 28th Street in Los Angeles. The school was later known as DEETS PACIFIC BIBLE COLLEGE.

SEPTEMBER 1910 the school moved to Pasadena, CA and the name was changed to

THE NAZARENE UNIVERSITY! IN 1918 the name was changed to PASADENA UNIVERSITY. ON FEBRUARY 14, 1924 the name was changed to PASADENA COLLEGE. In 1973 the College moved to San Diego and is now known as POINT LOMA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY!

While the first Church of The Nazarene was founded in 1895, THE DENOMINATION known as The Church of The Nazarenewas not officially founded until 10:40 A.M. on October 13, 2008 at Pilot Point, Texas, when The Pentecostal Church of The Nazarene came into being as a denomination.

In 1919 The General Assembly of The Church of The Nazarene changed the name to The Church of The Nazarene.

Ridgecrest Church of The Nazarene was formally established on January 20, 1946 by Rev. Iris Whittlesea.  Would you like to display your pictures?

The first District Assembly of The Los Angeles District Church of The Nazarene was held May 29-31,1951 at Pasadena, CA. An original picture of this event will be on display at our 100th Birthday Party on October 5th at Kerr McGee Civic Center.
