DXing with NATO, March 2000--My own personal account of being a reservist
activated to fly MEDEVAC helicopters for NATO in Bosnia while also taking along an HF amateur radio station. With my T9 call, I operated from a base near the confluence of the Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian
borders.
Satellite DXing To Go, June 2002--Building
your own portable satellite communication station to take and install anywhere! My experiences putting it into a four-wheel-drive camper and operating in a blizzard.
Portable in Paradise: Cruise Ship DXing, February 2003--
Designing and assembling an ultra-compact, suitcase-portable HF amateur radio station to work the world from a cruise ship in the South Pacific!
Three-flags Mobiling from ALCAN to Yucatán, Part I, February 2004--First of a two-part series detailing the design, construction, and adventure of installing short wave and VHF/UHF radio equipment in a rental RV for a trip through Alaska and Canada--all without leaving a scratch(!).
Three-flags Mobiling from ALCAN to Yucatán, Part II, March 2004--Second of the two-part series. This time I install our compact portable HF station in a rental car. We explore the scrub jungles of southern Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula while working the globe.
Polar Bear Portable, February 2006--Setting up a DX operation from the Canadian sub-arctic. I install a home-brewed HF antenna atop an all-metal, wheeled building (an amazing counterpoise!) towed out onto the frozen tundra to observe polar bears. The number of curious, hungry, 600-pound predators was only exceeded by the tally of contacts from all over the planet.
