Possible Virus?

Just because you do not download e-mail attachments no longer means you cannot get a virus. Since the majority of the users on the Internet are Windows users, most viruses are written to infect Windows. That doesn't mean there are no viruses written for the Mac, they are just currently not as common. If you have a MAC it is far less likely that you have a virus. However, for Windows users weekly checks for viruses can prevent data and sometimes hardware loss on your computer. Just having one of the Symptoms below can mean you are currently infected.

Symptoms: (not all viruses will have a noticeable symptom)

  • Receiving a lot of "undeliverable messages" in your e-mail
  • Computer is slower then normal.
  • Your modem is showing a fast connection speed but web sites and e-mail are downloading very slowly.

  • Please Note: Having these symptoms doesn't mean you have a virus. These symptoms can also be caused by old modem drivers, failing hardware, sending a message to a e-mail box which no longer exists and static on the phone lines.

Preventing viruses
  • Currently the simplest way to help prevent viruses is
    • Don't download attachments which come with your e-mail unless they are something you have requested from friends or family.

    • Promptly install windows updates.

Clean and checking for Viruses
  • To check your system without having to install software, go to PCPitStop.com and run their virus checker.

  • If you don't mind paying for and installing software on your system, Ridgenet recommends Norton Antivirus as the best and most widely available virus protection program. Got to Norton Antivirus's site to download a free trial and/or purchase Norton. *

  • If you are looking for an anti virus software which is FREE,
you might want to try out AntiVir ®. This program isn't perfect, but it is the first attempt to provide a free updatable AntiVirus Program. Tech support can help you over some of the rough spots but Ridgenet doesn't support this software and since it is open source, there is no manufacturer's number you can call for more advanced support. *

  • * Please note: Ridgenet is not responsible for the changes the software above may make to your system. For more information before you install the software, please speak to their manufactures.
