RidgeNet Extra Services
RidgeNet offers a wide range of extra services. Most services
are included free of charge with a regular dial-up account. Some
services do require additional registration or instructions before they
are available. Other services may be purchased in extra quantities as
desired. These pages are designed to provide information on what
services are available and how to get them.
Ready to Go Services:
Imap4
RidgeNet's mail server is already configured to accept Imap4 calls.
CGI & Server-Side Includes
RidgeNet's web server will run CGI and Server-side includes automatically. Please see the Posting Web Pages help page for further details.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
RidgeNet's IRC server may be reached at irc.ridgenet.net
To join, you will need an IRC program like mIRC (pc) or Homer (mac).
Web Proxy
RidgeNet operates a web proxy server to help increase internet
speed. The server caches frequently visited web and ftp sites on a
local machine. To take advantage of the proxy server, subscribers must
use a web browser than supports proxy servers. RidgeNet recommends
Netscape Navigator. Consult your web browser documentation for
instructions on where and how to add proxy support. RidgeNet's proxy
configuration settings are listed below.
- Automatic Proxy: http://proxy.ridgenet.net/proxy.pac
- Manual Proxy: proxy.ridgenet.net port=8080
Username Change
Subscribers may request a change in username/e-mail address by Contacting Ridgenet.
Please indicated both the current and desired usernames. Subscribers
requesting a username change for personal or cosmetic reasons will be
charged $8.00.
Additional Services by request:
Disk Space
- FREE: 20 megs for e-mail
- FREE: 5 megs for home directory and web directory
(This includes 200 megs access to your website per month)
- FREE: 3 megs for ftp directory
Subscribers get 13megs total diskspace with all dial-up and most dedicated accounts. That 13megs is divided up as you see above. Subscribers may NOT move unused space from one category to another. If your disk space usage exceeds your current allotted amount you will receive an e-mail from RidgeNet requesting correction or purchase of additional space. Subscribers who do not respond or correct the problem may have their web, ftp, or e-mail files deleted by staff. Subscribers may check the amount of space being used by telneting to owens and using the '/usr/ucb/du' command in the appropriate directory. RIDGENET IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FILES LEFT ON OUR SYSTEM. We do not backup, protect, or otherwize guarantee files placed on RidgeNet. RidgeNet strongly recommends all subscribers keep backups of important files (such as web pages, graphics, etc) on their own system.
Subscribers may purchase additional disk space for any category listed above. Additional disk space is purchased in increments of 5 megs for $5 a month.
If you would like to purchase additional disk space (for web, ftp or email), please contact Ridgenet.
Additional Email Accounts
RidgeNet dial-up subscribers may request a second e-mail account at no additional cost by Contacting Ridgenet. These e-mail accounts may NOT be used to dial into RidgeNet, nor access any portion of RidgeNet or the Internet other than e-mail. The second e-mail accounts are for the exclusive use of the subscriber who requested them. Any use of second e-mail accounts by persons other than the owner of the main account is in violation of this policy and may result in immediate and permanent removal of all accounts.
These secondary e-mail accounts have their own unique password. When you first select your second e-mail account, it will be set to the same password as your main account. You may change your second e-mail account password using Eudora's "Change Password" function. This method is currently the only way to change passwords on second e-mail accounts. If you change your main account password, it will NOT change your second e-mail account password.
Subscribers are NOT required to regularly change second e-mail account passwords.
All secondary e-mail accounts use the same name as the primary except that a '1' is added to the end (or the last character is change to a '1' if the usename already has 8 characters). IE. Username 'john' would have a second e-mail account 'john1@ridgecrest.ca.us'. Aliases for secondary e-mail account are available.
RidgeNet normally has new e-mail accounts setup within 1 business day (M-F) of receiving your request. You will receive an e-mail addressed to your regular account when the second account has been created.
Many e-mail programs do not support multiple e-mail accounts. If your e-mail program does not support multiple accounts, you will need to get software that does. We recommend purchasing Eudora Pro (www.eudora.com) or downloading Pegasus Mail (can be found on www.tucows.com). Other e-mail programs do support multiple accounts, you can search around as you like.
Each E-mail account after the first two free accounts are priced at $3.00 per month.
Subscribers may also obtain additional e-mail boxes from one of several free e-mail services available on the Internet. See www.hotmail.com or mail.yahoo.com. (These email boxes are not supported by Ridgenet.)
E-Mail Aliases
RidgeNet subscribers may request 1 alias per e-mail address. All aliases must exceed 8
characters in length.
Once you receive an alias, do NOT change anything in your e-mail
program. All alias functions are done automatically at RidgeNet.
For example, say your regular email address
was jsmith and you requested
and received the alias John_Smith.
Your e-mail program would still use the name jsmith@ridgecrest.ca.us,
but any message you sent out will automatically appear to come from
john_smith@ridgecrest.ca.us
and any e-mail sent to john_smith@ridgecrest.ca.us
will appear in your jsmith@ridgecrest.ca.us
box.
Frontpage Extensions
RidgeNet provides full support for Frontpage 97,98 and 2000. Frontpage support is currently provided at no additional cost, but subscribers must Contact Ridgenet and request the service. RidgeNet does not provide technical support for Frontpage. Any questions or problems you have should be refered to Microsoft Technical Support.
