Unwanted Disconnects
Problem: I keep getting disconnected when I don't want to.
Solutions: (sorted by most common to least common)
- Call Waiting. If you have call-waiting on your phone, you
need to disable this feature while connecting to the Internet. If you
are connected to RidgeNet and a "Call Waiting" call comes in, your
modem will most likely disconnect you from RidgeNet. To disable Call
Waiting while on the internet, add *70 to the beginning of the
number you dial to reach RidgeNet (IE. *70375-6073 or *70375-0771). See
the help pages for Win31, Win95, or Mac dialers for future
instructions: http://www.ridgenet.net/help
- Phone Pickup. Most homes have more than one phone
on the same line. If someone else in the house picks up the phone while
you are connected to RidgeNet, your modem will most likely disconnect.
I don't have a good solution for this problem expect purchasing a
dedicated phone line for your home or somehow preventing anyone in the
house from picking up a phone to make a call.
- Modem Problem. Occasionally you will find a modem
that has some problems maintaining a good connection. This problem is
usually related to the next problem, phone line quality.
- Phone Line Quality. Phone line quality can have a
big effect on unwanted disconnects. This problem usually occurs with
customers using high-speed modems like 28.8k or 33.6k. These modems are
so fast, they require a very clean phone line. Higher quality modems
often work better on noisy lines. The problem can be caused by dirty
lines in your house (your problem), or outside your house (Phone Company
problem). This problem usually occurs most often during peak hours
(6-10pm weekdays), during extreme temperatures, and during wind storms, but can occur at any time.
Solutions: Sometimes, depending on where
you live in Ridgecrest, you can end up going through old phone lines.
This can cause noise on the phone line and end with the customer being
disconnected.
- You can call the phone company and ask them to check your lines, but they generally only test
the outside lines, and only to the quality needed for voice conversations (well below the quality
needed for high speed modems).
- You can try calling Time & Temp, and carefully listing to the phone. If you hear any static,
hissing, popping, etc then you may have a phone line quality issue.
- You can upgrade you modem to a V.92 capable modem which will stay connected regarless of small phone noises
- Or if you still have an older modem, we sugest disabling 56k for all sites with poor phone line quality.
