Hello from Jeanie!

Introducing Jeanie

Born in Chicago fifty-some years ago, I've had the opportunity to live all around the United States in places such as: Madison, Wisconsin; upstate New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Tucson, Arizona; Wichita and Milford, Kansas; Blytheville Air Force Base, Arkansas; Boulder, Colorado; San Antonio, Texas; and China Lake, Ridgecrest, Riverside and now Inyokern, California.

I have three adult children. Jacqueline, 36, was born the winter after I turned 18 and was placed for adoption at birth. Although she was born in Los Angeles, she grew up in Denmark! Thanks to providence, she and I were reunited in July 1998. What a tremendous experience! In November 2005, Jacqueline completed her Master's degree. Pine, 33, works full-time at a local department store. She's the Department Lead of Human Resources. She lives nearby and we hang out often, sharing books, dinners, and wonderful conversations. Jed, 30, served 4 and a 1/2 years in the US Navy as an Electronics Technician (ET) stationed aboard a destroyer. Since he got out of the service, he went to work as an ET, building on the experience he got in the Navy.

Hubby, Floyd, and I celebrated our 15th Anniversary in April 2006 with a great little trip to Morro Bay, CA. Floyd is a carpenter and in April 2006 he began working for Kiewit Pacific Company on a project to put water back into Owens Lake. You can read more about his other endeavors on his page.

Words and languages have always fascinated me, so I work and play with them every chance I get. I worked full-time as a sign language interpreter until I retired from federal service in October 2005. I'm still called in to interpret when needed. I will always be in a learning curve with American Sign Language (ASL). As a kid, I started learning German and am amazed at how much I've retained. Every now and then, I have an opportunity to try my German out with a native speaker, and they never laugh too hard or for too long. I've done some cursory study of Danish, but it is slow going. I also have some experience with French (and the world's worst French accent) and some Spanish.

Another way I enjoy using words is as a member of a Toastmasters Club in the local area. Toastmasters Clubs provide a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere in which to practice public speaking skills. Because I find myself conducting meetings or educational programs in the volunteer work I continue to do for La Leche League, I thought it would benefit me (and my audiences) if I honed my public speaking skills. Toastmasters is a great place to do that!

I love crafts and usually have my fingers wrapped around one project or another. I enjoy the serenity of needlepoint and like do my work on 14 count plastic canvas with perle cotton. Rubber stamp art and card making are two of my great passions. I just can't get enough of all the papers, fibers, embellishments, ink pads, creative rubber art stamps and oodles of ideas for handmade cards!

Another great love is scrapbooking because I find that also encompasses all the fun stuff I love other than languages and stitching: Lots of different colored and patterned PAPERs. Photo-safe PENS in a variety of colors and with different point types. STICKERS! All too cute for words. PICTURES, pictures, pictures and Telling the Story behind the Pictures for today's enjoyment and tomorrow's legacy. All bound up neatly in hand-crafted photo safe scrapbooks to browse through, remember the good times, and to leave a legacy for my family.

Following my Grandma Rockey's example, I've been an avid letter writer all my life. I love being connected and keeping in touch with family, friends, and pen friends (who are merely friends I haven't met, yet). Sending out birthday greetings to people also gives me great joy, so send me your birthdate (if I don't already have it) and I'll put you on my list! (See the Birthday Alarm link below and you'll know my secret to keeping track of everyone's birthdates!)
